Author, Mindfulness Trainer, Coach, Educator and Lecturer
Motivation
My name is Shamash (I need to get a better picture of myself!) and I have been teaching meditation for about ten years. I initially used it just to reduce stress, but have since discovered many more benefits. Mindfulness helps me tremendously in my daily life, giving me a greater meaning and purpose to all that I do. Thankfully, the ups and downs of life don't have such a strong hold on me since I started practising the art of mindfulness. In fact I think it's so wonderful, I spend most of my time studying, practising, teaching and writing about mindfulness!
Author
I am currently writing the book ' Mindfulness for Dummies' which will be available from 2nd July 2010. The book will be published globally and offers a great introduction to the whole field of mindfulness, ideal for both lay people and professionals alike. More info.
Educational Work
I have taught in a secondary school for eight years where most of the students practiced meditation on a daily basis, and continue to teach part time. I spend a large part of my time running mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) courses, coaching, training, writing and attending mindfulness retreats myself.
Mindful Lecturing I have run many personal development courses with adults, and have given public lectures on the 'Science of Mindfulness' and the 'Science of Gratitude' at Friends Meeting House in Euston. I'm happy to give a free talk on stress reduction or the benefits of mindfulness at your workplace/charity/organisation. I am also available to run half or full day mindfulness based stress reduction workshops.
Retreats and Workshops I have attended retreats with the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh, one of the world's foremost teachers and practitioners of Mindfulness. I have helped run the happiness conference several times, working with Matthieu Ricard on the last one. I am not a Buddhist myself, and teach all courses in a secular way. I have completed Mindfulness trainings of various lengths all over the world. I attend Mindfulness retreats annually to deepen my own practice.
Qualifications I trained to be a Mindfulness Teacher with the Centre of Mindfulness at Bangor University. You can find some information about me on their website too. I am qualified as a professional coach with Newcastle College and have a certificate in Counselling Skills. I hold a Masters Degree in Engineering (Imperial College) and a Masters Degree in Education (Open University), with a focus on Brain and Behaviour.
